Accommodation
International students are usually accommodated in the residence hall or in private apartments. There are two residence halls in Zadar. One has 94 rooms, 18 of which are triple, and 76 double rooms, which can accommodate a total of 206 students. There are three kitchenettes, two TV rooms, a large hall, a classroom, a computer cabinet, a laundry room and a recreational hall. The student is obligated to pay 89,59 EUR per month. The other, new residence hall, opened in 2022, has a capacity of 129 rooms with 284 beds. It includes a canteen with 500 seats, a living room, a separate study area, storerooms, a laundry room, a kitchenette and many other facilities. The student is obligated to pay 139,36 EUR per month for a double room, or 119,45 EUR per month for a triple room. A one-time administrative cost of 10,62 EUR must be paid for accommodation in both residence halls.

If you would like to live in the residence hall during your study period in Zadar you have to fill in the application form. You will receive the application form by email along with your acceptance letter as soon as your Online Learning agreement/Learning Agreement is accepted by the University of Zadar. There are 10 places for international students at the Residence Hall, and the selection is made on a first-come, first-served basis. Additional capacity is possible upon request, and is subject to availability.

Only students who will come to UNIZD in the framework of Erasmus+ or CEEPUS scholarship programme can apply for a place in the student dormitory.  A much more reliable way of finding satisfactory accommodation is a private room or an apartment. Prices vary, but you can find a room for approximately 170 €, while the prices for apartments range between 300 and 450 € per month.

Registration
After arriving, exchange students must register at the International Relations Office an X-card (if the exchange programme provides it) and an AAI account with a password for Internet access.

The X-card is a student identity card issued by the Croatian Ministry of Education and Science (MZO – Ministarstvo znanosti i obrazovanja). By presenting this identification card the student can enjoy discount prices in student bars and restaurants. MZO provides X-cards for Erasmus+ KA103 and KA131, KA171 and CEEPUS incoming students.

An AAI account is the account of the AAI@EduHr system which provides free wireless Internet access in the Student Dormitory and University facilities. If the student’s home country is connected to the pan-European roaming system Eduroam or eduGAIN, the students can use the identity account they received from their home university. Otherwise, the student will receive an AAI account upon arrival to the University.

Inclusion
The University of Zadar supports the Erasmus+ horizontal priority related to inclusion and diversity, aiming to support people with fewer economic, social, and cultural opportunities. Although the University of Zadar has the infrastructure to host students and staff with disabilities (accommodation, classroom access, etc.), depending on the nature of the disability, we strongly advise providing as much information ahead of time as possible to inform the student/staff of the feasibility of the mobility. More information can be found here. If you have any questions or problems please contact the International Relations Office.

Student Residence Permit
According to the law regarding foreigners, foreign nationals intending to study in Croatia must regulate their temporary residence for the purpose of studying if their stay in Croatia is longer than 90 days. International students are not allowed to attend classes at the University of Zadar until they have procured a residence permit.

Visa requirements: Nationals of countries subject to the visa requirement also need to procure an entry visa for Croatia (Viza C). Information on countries subject to the visa requirement can be found on the website of the Croatian Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs. An application for a visa (Viza C) must be submitted to the diplomatic mission or consulate of the Republic of Croatia in the foreign national’s home country. The visa application can be submitted either in person or via email. A list of missions and consulates is available on the website of the Croatian Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs.

Where to submit residence permit application:
International students can submit the residence permit application in two ways:

  1. to the diplomatic mission or consulate of the Republic of Croatia in their home country or
  2. to the Central Police Station in Zadar (Address: Put Murvice 9, 23 000 Zadar) immediately upon their arrival to Croatia if they submit proof of taking part in an exchange programme approved by the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports in Croatia (Erasmus+, Erasmus Mundus, CEEPUS, bilateral exchange, etc.) – recommended!

When to submit residence permit application: Students submitting an application to the diplomatic mission or consulate of the Republic of Croatia in their home country should do so prior to their scheduled arrival to Croatia. The usual procedure can take three months or longer (including the time needed for all necessary documents to be translated into Croatian). There is also a fast-track option for handling the application, and students can request this at the diplomatic mission or consulate, in which case they pay a higher fee. Students submitting the application to the Central Police Station in Zadar should do so immediately upon entering Croatia.

Health Care
During their stay in Croatia, all international students with temporary residence must have health insurance. Regulated health insurance is a prerequisite for being granted a temporary residence permit. Access to health care is provided to students from European Union countries during their temporary stay in Croatia through the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), which is issued by their national health insurance providers. In the event of unforeseen illness, injury, or accident, the EHIC enables access to health care that cannot be postponed until the holder’s planned return to their home country. The costs are covered by the national health care provider in the holder’s country of permanent residence, and the holder is obligated to cover only the participation fees in Croatia if they are mandatory for Croatian insurance holders as well.
Countries with health care agreements with Croatia: Croatia regulates the issue of health care for foreign nationals during their stay in Croatia through agreements on social security signed with the following countries: Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Montenegro, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, and the United Kingdom. Students from these aforementioned countries are recommended to contact their public health insurance provider before arrival to Croatia to obtain the document that enables them to receive health care in Croatia. The right to health care is realised as foreseen in the social security contract received by each student. Health care is provided to foreign nationals in the same way and under the same conditions as to Croatian insurance holders: within the network of physicians and health care institutions of the Croatian Institute for Health Insurance (HZZO - Hrvatski zavod za zdravstveno osiguranje). International students have to cover only the participation fees if these are prescribed by Croatian laws.
Countries without health care agreements with Croatia: Students from countries that do not have social security agreements with Croatia (or if students are unable to obtain the document foreseen by the social security agreement) are obliged, upon entry into Croatia, to become insured with the Croatian Institute for Health Insurance (HZZO). To register with the HZZO, students should report to the HZZO’s appropriate branch office. Students need to present their student identification number, which is issued to each student at the central police station upon applying for temporary residence. The HZZO will then temporarily register the student and issue a certificate. This certificate must then be presented at the central police station before students can be granted temporary residence. Once temporary residence has been granted, the HZZO issues a document based on which the student attains the right to full health care within the network of physicians and health institutions of the HZZO. The health insurance cost is approximately 55 €, for which the appropriate Tax Department of the Ministry of Finance sends money orders to the students’ registered places of residence in Croatia.
Visiting students funded by the Ministry of Science, Education and Sports: The Ministry of Science, Education and Sports covers the health insurance expenses for all foreign nationals who are grant recipients of the Ministry, if so foreseen in the grant contract.
Erasmus+ students: Erasmus+ students staying temporarily in Croatia are exempted from paying the fee for compulsory health insurance in Croatia. They may use international health insurance from their home country or choose to be insured at the health insurance company of their choice.
How to access health care services in Zadar: General health care services can be accessed by selecting a primary health care physician, whereas health care on other levels (e.g. hospital, specialist examinations) can be accessed by a referral document (uputnica) issued by the selected physician.
There is no university clinic centre in Zadar, but the student can choose any general physician. In very urgent cases, students can call the emergency service (phone: 194) or go directly to the emergency service clinic (Address: Ivana Mažuranića 28a, 23 000 Zadar).
Pharmacies are called “ljekarna” and on weekdays they are open all day long from 8 AM till 8 PM. On Sundays and holidays, the pharmacy Ljekarna Jadran at the address Put Murvice 2, 23000 Zadar, is open 24 hours.
In case you need to visit the doctor during your stay:
General health care can be accessed by selecting one of the primary health care doctors. You can find the list of doctors here. The list is in Croatian, but you will be able to understand the address and the details you need. Students can also contact doctors at the Institute of Public Health in Zadar. If you would have any problems finding a doctor, you can contact the office of the Croatian Institute for Health Insurance (HZZO) in Zadar.
